How to Introduce a Skincare Routine to Your BF

Updated: Jan 26, 2023

I know what you're thinking... your boyfriend still uses 3-in-1 body wash, how are you going to get him to start a skincare routine? I felt your pain. Believe it or not, hygiene is just as important to men as it is to women and look good, feel good doesn't discriminate. I never anticipated my boyfriend asking me how his skin looked. I didn't realize how important his appearance was to him. The beauty industry focuses more on acne prone skin products for men, forgetting that aging men want healthy, glowing skin too. I'm here to help you find a skincare routine for your loved one that will make him feel vibrant.

Whether his skin type is oily, dry or combination, skincare is gender-free and there's a routine that's perfect for him.

Why Men Need Skincare

Men do not use as many products on their skin as women.. remember 3-in-1...so their skin tends to have less internal damage than women.

A man's skincare routine needs to be simple and straightforward-- focusing on his skin type and problems targeted.

Cleansers

The misconception that every boy has oily, acne-prone skin causes some men to struggle with skin issues as they get older. Males with dry skin need to be educated on proper cleansers or face washes for their skin type. Oily skin? Salicylic acid and acne preventing cleansers are perfect for him. Dry skin? steer away from acne supporting products and focus on antioxidants, squalane and glycerin. These ingredients still fight acne without tearing up his skin.

Toner/Exfoliator

When I started teaching my boyfriend about skincare, he heard "exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate." He was over exfoliating which irritated his fragile skin. Remind him that exfoliators remove the dead skin cells from the surface, leaving a soft and smooth complexion. He only needs to use it once or twice a week when he notices a buildup in his pores.

Exfoliators include both AHA and BHA's that combat acne and aging. BHA targets acne prevention and texture, where as AHA has anti-aging benefits and works best for dry skin. You can learn more on my AHA vs. BHA post.

My boyfriend has combination skin-- dry, with blackheads and enlarged pores. He needed a toner that levels his skin's pH and shrinks pore size around his nose. If you want to see results, a great product for shrinking pores for combo to oily skin is Paula's Choice Pore-Reducing Toner. Men want to use simple products with easy labels he can read and ingredients he can understand, for a reasonable price. The best all-in-one serum that takes care of all his skin's needs is the TruSkin facial serum.

Shaving

Whether he enjoys having a little scruff or baby smooth face, shaving removes the epidermis (top) layer of skin that's responsible for keeping skin hydrated. After shaving, skin is susceptible to drying out, acne, irritation and razor burn. This is the perfect time to explain why moisturizing is so important. On the plus side, shaving removes dead skin cells and exfoliates, allowing products to be easily absorbed into the skin. Use a moisturizer everyday that resembles his skin type that includes SPF. A simple way to remember which moisturizer is right for him is that gel moisturizers are for oily skin, creamy lotions for dry skin.

Anti-aging

Last but not least, men get wrinkles and fine lines too. Don't forget to incorporate a retinol night cream or serum into his night time routine. Antioxidants like Vitamin C will leave his skin glowing and an adorable smile on his face.

Here's a list of all my skincare favorites below that he can add to his facial routine.
