What is the difference? When do you use them? Which one is best for my skin type? Don't worry, I'm going to compare the two exfoliators and help you determine which one you should add to your skin care routine.
Many exfoliants include both AHA and BHA but what do these acids really do for your skin? They are thought to be interchangeable because both acids smooth, soften and brighten skin but which one you should use depends on your skin type.

What are AHAs?
AHA or alpha hydroxy acids are known for hydrating dry skin and promoting new cell production. Dead skin cells tend to stay closer to the surface of your skin that's why AHAs, like Lactic acid, are effective at removing the dirt and dead skin cells trapped in the top layer of skin. This water-soluble acid leaves you skin feeling plump and smooth. Lactic acid is a weaker acid which makes it a great AHA for people with sensitive skin. If you have dry yet insensitive skin, Glycolic acid is a stronger AHA that may work better for you.
What are BHAs?
BHAs or beta hydroxy acids are oil-soluble which makes them able to drive deep into your skins dermis layer. This makes BHAs beneficial to everyone with oily or acne prone skin. Besides treating acne, BHAs are great for wrinkles and calming red, irritated skin. I use a BHAs exfoliator at least once a week for a deeper clean and prevent future break outs. BHAs are stronger than most AHAs which is why you may notice a lower percentage on packaging. When trying any new product, don't be afraid to start with a weaker dose in order to build up your skin's tolerance. I do not have oily, acne prone skin so my skin care doesn't rely heavily on salicylic acid. My skin benefits from BHAs whenever its irritated and to prevent acne. Most acne washes contain salicylic acid so you might be getting your exfoliant dose from there as well.
Why should I use AHA and BHA?
If you are struggling with stubborn blemishes or feel like you can't scrub all the dry skin off, these acids are what you need. AHA is best for hydrating dry and sensitive skin. BHA is ideal if you have oily or acne prone skin. Both acids are beneficial for improving skin appearance and exfoliating pores. Based on your skin type, there's many different ways to incorporate these acids into your skin care routine. If you want to use both separately, you should use your BHA in the morning and AHA at night. Combo skin? you can use a product that contains both exfoliants. Skin type determines which acid you need more of. Make sure to limit sun exposure after using these essential acids. Their purpose is to fix hyperpigmentation caused by sun exposure and strip dead skin. Remember to use sunscreen to protect your skin's progress! .
My skin is extremely sensitive so whenever my skin is irritated or feels dirty, first thing I do is use The Ordinary peeling solution 30ml 30% AHA 2% BHA. This potent solution gets rid of my skin blemishes over night and I know I will wake up to smooth, hydrated skin. Warning! the serum is strong; including glycolic, lactic and salicylic acid and only stays on for 10 minutes. Make sure to read the product description and directions before using it.
Where can I buy AHA and BHA?
I have tried many exfoliants and scrubs to get rid of the dry skin that stuck in my pores. The product I use daily to keep my skin clean and hydrated is the Biossance lactic acid resurfacing night serum. I use this during my night time skin care routine after my toner and right before finishing up with moisturizer. This 10% vegan lactic acid serum has never irritated my sensitive skin and recommend it to anyone with bumpy skin texture.
Paula's Choice skin perfecting 2% BHA gel is the best BHA exfoliant I can recommend. If I had oily skin, I would replace my lactic acid with this salicylic acid in my night time routine.
I get most of my products from the company's website but when I run out of a product and I need it asap I get it on Amazon. You can check out these products on Amazon listed below by clicking on the links!
