The Difference Between Squalane and Squalene

Updated: Dec 15, 2022

The simple difference between squalane and squalene is that squalene is oil made by our skin cells, squalane is an oil made to help our skin cells.

Our skin glands produce squalene to hydrate and maintain the barrier of our skin. What happens when we get older, our skin stops producing as much squalene, that's when squalane comes into play. Squalane, derived from olive oil, is a byproduct of squalene that is quickly absorbed by our skin. This oil is extremely hydrating and moisturizing which is why it has been added it into a lot of skin care products.

Benefits of Squalane:

  • strengthen chipped or weak nails

  • hydrates dry or brittle hair

  • extreme skin hydration

  • clear and odorless

  • eco-friendly and vegan

  • natural product/cruelty-free

  • boosts collagen production

  • fights against damaged skin

Adding squalane products into your skin care routine is rewarding as you get older. A brand that I love is Biossance and the foundation to all their products is squalane. Personally, my sensitive and dry skin loves squalane based products. Their vitamin c rose oil is a must have product for glowing skin. The oil is designed to lock in maximum hydration, dark spot correcting and improve firmness. The initial after math of using the product makes makes your skin glow and you feel the hydration. I like using this product under my foundation to get a glowing finish.
